Painting the ice

Visit www.kaliseum.org/open_skate_stick_and_puck for rates and schedules. The Kalkaska Area Hockey Association is hosting a “Try Hockey For Free” event at the Kaliseum on Sunday, Oct. 11 from 3-4 p.m. Register at www.kalkaskahockey.org.

Kaliseum Director John Starr sprays the first layer of whitened ice onto the rink. Getting the ice ready for the season involves spraying multiple layers, starting with a layer of plain ice on top of the concrete. After Starr adds three layers of whitened ice, he can begin marking and painting the lines and circles used for hockey games.
