Edwin Robert Giddings

Edwin Robert “Bob” Giddings passed away peacefully on Aug. 19, 2026 in Charlevoix Township, Charlevoix County, Michigan. He was born to George and Marianna Giddings on Jan. 7, 1938, the fifth of eight children. Edwin is survived by two brothers: Hon. James R. (Julie) Giddings and Michael H. (Louise) Giddings, and his sister-in-law, Judy Giddings. He is also survived by 10 nieces and nephews, as well as several great and great-great nieces and nephews. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Marianna Giddings, his sisters, Mary Anne Hood, Joanna Ruth Iliew and brothers, George H. Giddings, John W. Giddings, and Thomas A. Giddings. 

He grew up in Michigan and graduated from Lansing Eastern High School. Following a long family tradition starting with his father, George, he applied to and was accepted into Michigan State University. At that time, he developed a profound interest in playing bridge. Indeed, his interest was at times so keen that he overlooked his studies. In some instances, he forgot to attend classes. 

In fact, Bob was twice booted out of Michigan State University for academic reasons. But his patient and supportive mother each time prevailed on the powers there to readmit him. However, when he was kicked out for the third time, his dear mother’s patience had been exhausted. He wisely enlisted in the United States Air Force. He served and was honorably discharged after four years. He returned to Michigan State University and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1965. He then spent the following 30 years in the service of the National Security Agency working at locations in the United States as well as in England and Korea. 

Upon retirement, he moved to northern Michigan and stayed for the rest of his life. Since he did not have working responsibilities, Bob returned to the craven life of a bridge player, skulking around bridge tournaments wherever they could be found. He especially enjoyed tournaments with his long-time bridge playing partners, Nancy McCully, Louise Haley, Judy King and Judy Thurston. 

He was sufficiently competent to earn over 350 master points. However, like others, he took exception to the point system established by the American Contract Bridge League. He believed that it was not truly representative of a player’s ability. 

Before being disabled by cancer in his right shoulder, he was an avid golfer and could be found either at Antrim Dells or A-Ga-Ming Golf Resort. Other times, working as a volunteer, he often picked up cardboard for recycling from businesses in the Central Lake area. 

Friends and family will gather for visitation at noon on Saturday, Aug. 29, 2026. This will be followed by a memorial service at 1p.m. at Mortensen Funeral Home, 2333 South Main Street, Central Lake.
