Whiteford taking ‘common sense’ approach to Governor’s order

KALKASKA — Less than a week after four northern Michigan sheriffs released a statement saying they would not be strictly enforcing social distancing restrictions put forth by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, Kalkaska County Sheriff Patrick Whiteford came forward with a release of his own with many of the same principles.

Saying he believed ‘a common sense approach’ would go toward enforcement efforts, Whiteford pledged to ensure residents of the county and visitors would not have their constitutional rights infringed upon.

“While there may be situations where enforcement of the Executive Orders are necessary to ensure public health, it will not come at the cost of giving up your constitutional rights,” Whiteford wrote.
