KALKASKA COUNTY – Local voters had to decide more during the Tuesday, Aug. 7, primary election than who would earn the right to move on to the November general election, as several millage requests and renewals were on various township ballots.

Five of the county’s 12 townships had at least one issue on Tuesday’s primary ballot.

In Bear Lake Township, voters approved two millage renewals. The first is a 1-mill, four-year renewal request for the township’s fire department millage, which passed by a wide margin of 205 “yes” votes to just 31 “no” votes.

That was according to unofficial election results released by the Kalkaska County Clerk’s Office late Tuesday night.

The levy is slated for the funding of operation, maintenance and equipping of the Bear Lake Township Fire Department Station No. 8 and will raise more than $55,660 in its first year.

The second issue before township voters – renewal of a 0.35-mill, four-year rescue unit millage – was approved by nearly the same margin, 202-34. That will help fund the operation, maintenance and equipping of Station No. 8’s rescue unit and raise more than $19,480 in its first year.

Yet another renewal of a 1-mill, four-year fire department millage was approved, 470-212, by voters in Clearwater Township.

However, a second issue before Clearwater Township voters suffered a much different fate, where they dramatically said “no” to a proposed zoning amendment that would revise lake, river and stream regulations, as well as waterfront setback rules, that were enacted by the township’s board of trustees in March. The proposal was defeated Tuesday, 474-212.
