BELLAIRE – The Village of Bellaire will repair and restore a memorial to local World War II veterans adjacent to the village's Community Hall, downtown, at the intersection of Bridge and Broad streets.

The monument was originally placed by a local chapter of the Blue Star Mothers and Wives of Veterans shortly after the end of World War II.

Responding to a group representing Bellaire's Friends of Veterans and others interested in the monument, Bellaire DPW Supervisor Bradley Keiser said during last week's monthly council meeting that the village's Buildings and Grounds committee members had agreed to take on responsibility for the repair.

“Chairman Bryan Hardy has said there are more than sufficient funds in the committee's budget to allow for the costs of the work," Keiser said.

"Bellaire area resident Kent Birmingham – who did the restoration of foundations and power washing of the gravestones in Lakeview Cemetery – said that the stone mason he had worked with had offered to volunteer his services, and I'm talking to Lamina about the restoration of the bronze plaque,” he added, “which means the village will have minimal costs for the project.

"We want to have it all done by Memorial Day."

Keiser made the announcement during public comment as the Nov. 6 meeting began.

The DPW supervisor's announcement as soon as the meeting got underway, which came as a surprise to most in the room, drew pleased responses.

"We are excited to hear this," said Ray Mills of the Friends of Veterans. "With Veterans Day coming up, this is great timing – just perfect."

Area veteran Carl Griffith, who first brought the plight of the aging memorial to the community, said, "I'm really pleased that the village will see to it that's re-furnished," adding that he would like to see the monument lighted at night as well.
