BELLAIRE – Call it a preview, or first draft.

About a dozen officials, business representatives and other interested individuals gathered last Wednesday, Sept. 26, to review a preliminary draft of a report Village of Bellaire President Dave Schulz will present Oct. 11 to the Antrim County Board of Commissioners.

The report, developed with assistance from the Northern Lakes Economic Alliance, outlines a thorough evaluation and several options – including a preferred plan – toward implementing the county’s master plan for its facilities that Schultz believes would benefit all affected parties – including the county, village, townships and taxpayers.

However, no decisions have been made and any plans under consideration are simply drafts, yet to be reviewed and amended before a final proposal is offered up for public input and discussion prior to a final decision by the county board.

So why is the Village of Bellaire taking an active step toward getting involved in county business? The answer is simple according to Schulz.

“All of us are residents of the county, and the county is essentially a village resident,” Schulz said. “We all see the importance of working together, and as a resident of the village, the county needs to see the potential impact of its future considerations on the village.”

So how did this begin and where is it headed?

Several attendees at the Sept. 26 meeting noted than many residents throughout the county “don’t know anything about what’s going on” – despite several articles in The Review, and a number of public meetings which have discussed the topic. It was also noted that rumors and misinformation on social media haven’t helped the situation.

Schulz and County Administrator Pete Garwood agreed that ensuring continued transparency and clear communication with the public are paramount as the process moves along. Both are looking forward to Schultz’s Oct. 11 presentation to the commissioners.
