VIllage officials to start petition drive to become a city
KALKASKA — Officials with the Village of Kalkaska are preparing to take the first steps toward changing the village’s legal status to that of a city with a petition drive set to start in early April.
Village President Harley Wales said he and others will be setting up tables at Railroad Square on April 9-11 to collect the 101 signatures of Kalkaska residents needed to send with the village’s application to the Michigan Boundary Commission.
“We need as many as we can get,” Wales said. There is an actual 'hard number' of 101. However, those who sign the petition need to be electors and deeded homeowners within the village, so that narrows the scope of those eligible.
