Village officials ready to start $3.2M redevelopment project

KALKASKA – The start of a new year could also be the start of a new chapter for downtown Kalkaska, as village officials gear up for a multi-million dollar redevelopment project that is planned to get underway as early as this coming spring.

After nearly five years of planning, the missing piece of the puzzle — funding for the project — fell into place when the Michigan Strategic Fund on Dec. 17 awarded the entire $3.47 million the Village of Kalkaska and the Kalkaska Downtown Development Authority had requested to remake the 300 block of Cedar Street, which includes property that was once home to the former chamber of commerce office and Erb Lumber center in downtown Kalkaska, and is now known as Railroad Square. 

With so much time already dedicated to the project, village officials say there’s not much more to do, other than wait for the end of winter.
