Village, county benefit from growing cannabis industry
KALKASKA — Just a couple of years after facing possible bankruptcy, the Village of Kalkaska is back in the black thanks to a budding cannabis industry.
At its regular monthly meeting Monday, March 8, the Kalkaska Village Council approved its first budget amendment for the 2021-22 fiscal year. But, unlike past years, the change was a positive one, as the amendment was to allow for the addition of $84,003 in revenue, courtesy of the state's 10 percent surtax on the sales of recreational marijuana.
“This is income for us,” said Trustee Michelle Miller, chairperson of the council’s Finance Committee. “Nothing is going out.”
