Village awarded MNRTF grant for improvements at popular beach area
ELK RAPIDS – The village of Elk Rapids received some very welcome news last week when it was announced that it has been recommended for a Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund (MNRTF) development grant that will allow for extensive improvements to a popular recreation area.
The $99,100 grant recommended for the Dam Beach and Fishing Park will allow the village to construct restrooms and improved parking and access, all exceeding Americans with Disabilities Act standards to the beach and adjacent fishing park at the Elk Rapids hydroelectric dam area, located on Grand Traverse Bay at the mouth of the Elk River.
The site has long been a popular destination for anglers, beach-goers, bird watchers on the Sunset Coast Birding Trail, boaters and kayakers on the Lake Michigan water trail and new Chain-of-Lakes water trail.
