Three cheers for Antrim County’s BOC for keeping Bargy on Board of Health

The Health Department of Northwest Michigan helps Antrim, Charlevoix, Emmet, and Otsego counties achieve health equity by promoting well-being, preventing disease, and protecting the environment.  HDNW is organized by the County Boards of Commissioners. Karen Bargy is appointed to the HDNW’s Board of Health by the Antrim County BOC.
HDNW recommended masking for all K-12 teachers, staff, and students in early August.  By Aug. 27, 2021, however, the Delta-variant had ravaged our area.  HDNW recorded 536 new cases (and nine deaths) in the first three weeks of August – more than five times the number for July (102).  Area hospitals reported a dangerous strain on capacity, including limited ICU beds and extremely long wait times in the ER.  Patients were being diverted to hospitals out of the area . . . which strained local EMS capacity.  Those trends and heightened risk factors made it clear that, without masking, increased incidents of school-based transmission were certain.
