Teachers, KPS reach agreement on new one-year contract
KALKASKA — As far as the upcoming 2020-21 school year is concerned, Kalkaska Public Schools and its teachers are now on the same page after agreeing to a new, one-year contract.
The KPS Board of Education unanimously approved the contract at a special meeting Monday, Aug. 18.
Supt. Terry Starr said the shorter length of the contract is designed to allow the school district to be able to react to potential changes in state funding, specifically potential funding cutbacks, that may result in lower revenues due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
“As we are in the throes of a pandemic — and school funding is in an uncertain time — the decision was made to only do a one-year agreement,” Starr said. “The district continues to appreciate and demonstrate its appreciation however best possible for the caring, hard-working and dedicated teaching staff of Kalkaska Public Schools.”
