Steep price increase in building materials giving homeowners, area builders sticker shock

BELLAIRE — With warmer weather, northern Michigan's construction season is already well underway. But a stiff increase in prices due to the effects of the pandemic is giving sticker shock to homeowners as well as those who work in the building trades.
"It hasn't been good," said Jeff Hall, owner of J & J Roofing in Central Lake. "People are starting to get mad, and I can't blame them."
Although the price of roof shingles has only risen approximately seven percent in the last year, prices of plywood sheathing have gone through the roof, Hall said.
