ELK RAPIDS — Taking their stand-up paddleboards across large bodies of water is nothing new for local paddleboarders Joe Lorennz, Kwin Morris and Jeff Guy.

The three men, who make up the Stand Up for Great Lakes non-profit, have crossed four of the five Great Lakes — Michigan, Erie, Superior and Huron.

But after a plan to complete their Great Lakes crossings this summer by traversing Lake Ontario fell through due to COVID-19, the trio opted to take on a different challenge and are instead going to paddle the entirety of the Chain of Lakes, aiming to raise $7,000 for Paddle while also raising awareness for Great Lakes environmental issues and also the Chain of Lakes Water Trail. They newest adventure, which will take place on Aug. 1, will begin at Six-Mile Lake near Ellsworth and end at the Elk Rapids Dam. The 60-mile trip is expected to take about 20 hours.

While the Chain of Lakes isn’t reputed to be as cold or treacherous as the five Great Lakes, it still has dangers.
