TRAVERSE CITY – Terri Sibole didn’t start volunteering with Kalkaska Cub Scout and Boy Scout Troop No. 629 so she could add to her personal trophy case.

But, the Garfield Township resident was honored for her nearly decade of service to scouting at the Scenic Trails District/Eagle Recognition Dinner on Thursday, May 10, held at the Traverse City Elks Lodge No. 323.

Sibole, who is the Garfield Township treasurer and works for the Kalkaska County Treasurer’s Office, was one of three volunteers to receive the District Award of Merit, the highest award a scouting volunteer can earn.

“I was totally in awe,” Sibole said. “It was a huge surprise.”

For Sibole, the award is part of a journey that started more than nine years ago when she was looking to register her twin sons, Zachary and Jacob, to join the local Cub Scout pack.

“I called to get info on them joining and they said they needed a Tiger leader,” she said. “I said I'd give it a try. That year I had 26 first-grade boys.”

Since then, Sibole has served as a Cub Scout Master for six years and Scout Master for four years. She currently oversees both the pack and troop for No. 629.
