A shed to call home

ALDEN — Alden resident Levi Holmes has had many challenges in his young life.

Born with a rare genetic condition, DiGeorge Syndrome, the 16-year-old has braved constant health problems, numerous hospital stays and surgeries. His immune system is compromised, and he has heart problems. That said, he does his share with a long list of family chores. He’s a big brother to four younger siblings, all of whom are homeschooled. He makes the best of his challenges by being the kind of big brother that helps them in any way that he can.

When he was nominated for Make-A-Wish Foundation, Levi decided he wanted his own hangout. At his previous home when he was younger, his favorite place was a shed with a sleeping loft where he sometimes camped out with his father. When the family moved, the shed could not be relocated because of the prohibitive cost to haul it. When the foundation asked, his request was simple: he wanted a man cave on the family’s farm, a place that would replace what he was missing.
