BELLAIRE — The 11th annual Ryan Shay Memorial Cross Country Invitational gets the 2019 season underway on Saturday with a new location.

After 10 years of the race being held at the Jean Burns Homestead in Central Lake, the race is moving to the Centennial Golf Club at 3388 West Eddy School Road in Bellaire. It marks a return to the location that former Central Lake coaches Joe and Sue Shay held their first cross country meet 26 years ago.

Race director Sue Shay said she was grateful to be able to utilize the Burns Farm as a race site over the past decade, but she also was grateful to Chris and Merrie Corbett, who purchased the golf course recently and allowed the race to be held there.

“It was one of the most beautiful venues we ever used, and we will miss it,” said Sue Shay. “But, quite frankly it was very labor intensive to prepare and maintain. At our age we are grateful to be at the Corbett’s gorgeous golf course where we no longer need to mow approximately 10 miles of hayfield. We will be forever grateful to Jean Burns for her generosity in allowing us to use her property. She helped us continue to offer quality meets that led to many memorable experiences for thousands of young cross country runners, their families, and coaches.”
