School board approves changes to athletic handbook
KALKASKA — Kalkaska Public Schools officials are hoping that changes to the school district's athletic handbook will help raise standards in the classroom, as well as on the field of play.
The KPS Board of Education unanimously voted to adopt changes in the district’s high school athletic handbook at a special meeting Monday, Aug. 18.
According to Martin Neuhoff, Kalkaska High School director of athletics, one of the changes to the handbook includes that, if a student gets an "F" for the weekly eligibility list, not only will the student not be allowed to participate in sports for the upcoming week but they will be required to go to a homework lab, meet with a counselor and help set up a tutor program that will improve their grades.
It will not be an option to play with an "F," the handbook now states.
Also, if a student receives a D+, D or a D-, the student will be allowed to play but will be required to attend a homework lab two times during that week. School officials will monitor the progress of the student-athlete and provide assistance as needed.
