IONIA — Mancelona’s George Schlaff had the highest pound for pound total of any boys varsity powerlifter on the way to being named Lifter of the Meet at Saturday’s Powerlifting State Meet.

Schlaff, who finished first in the 155-pound boys varsity division, had a pound for pound total of 7.541 after recording a total weight lifted of 1,205 pounds. That total included a lift of 325 pounds in the bench press, which broke a state record. Schlaff also had lifts of 435 in the squat and 445 in the deadlift. He is the third straight state champion for Mancelona, joining Kelcie Howard in 2018 and Ian Meeder in 2017.

Schlaff was one of three first-place finishers among varsity boys from the area who competed at the meet. Central Lake’s Izaac DeYoung took first in the 132-pound division, while Kalkaska’s DiOndre Blake took first in the 114-pound class. DeYoung recorded a total of 865 from a squat of 320, a bench of 205 and a deadlift of 340. Blake, meanwhile, had a total of 715, lifting 265 in the squat, 175 in the bench and 275 in the deadlift.
