Romeyn is girls cross country runner of the year

REGION — The last name Romeyn has been synonymous with exceptional running for several years. First Winter, then Isaiah, lifted the Ellsworth boys cross country teams with their abilities to perform at a high level. That has continued with their younger sister, Maia, who was a top contributor for the Lancers’ girls team as an eighth grader last season and was the Lancers’ first finisher at all their biggest meets of the year this year in leading Ellsworth back to the Division 4 state finals for the fourth year in a row. Her performance this year makes her worthy to be the All-Area girls cross country runner of the year.

Romeyn and teammate Judy Veldboom gave the Lancers a one-two punch that no other team in the area could match, with those two recording two of the three sub 21-minute personal best times on the season. The third was Mancelona’s Alexis Newbould, who stepped up in her senior season and helped lead the Lady Ironmen this season. Like Newbould, Bellaire’s Teegan Dawson put a nice stamp on her career with a berth in the state finals.

Ellsworth has all the tools for another good season in 2020 as their top five runners could all return, including eighth grader Avery Strange, sophomore Olivia Strange and junior Christy Figueroa.

Kalkaska and Forest Area also have teams with potential to achieve big things in the coming year.
