Ready to Bloom: Ol’ Glory Heritage Farm is ‘the flower destination’
ALDEN – Hidden behind the hills overlooking the Village of Alden and Torch Lake, Ol’ Glory Heritage Farm is growing a future filled with flowers.
For those who would like to visit the u-pick to create their own arrangement with help from owner, Sarah Holmes, the farm is a great “destination.”
Holmes’ carefully curated fields offer an ideal classroom with more than 80 flower varieties under cultivation. Private groups can book appointments, but she is planning to expand her offerings next year to include classes in flower arranging.
“Gardening is healing,” Holmes said.
While this year’s rain and cool weather have slowed the harvest, the flowers should be in full bloom by August.
Both Sarah and her husband Jeremy grew up in rural Michigan. They chose to move to Alden in 2016 because of the unique acreage that became available. The Ol’ Glory property was originally homesteaded by early settlers of Alden.
But history figures in a more personal way, through Sarah’s English grandmother. From her, she learned about the making of teas and jams, and cottage gardening. Additionally, Sarah has been working on her own jam recipes as well as other culinary concoctions, so perhaps future classes will cover those tasty topics.
“Ol’ Glory is also a labor of love in so many ways,” she stated.
