Reaction mixed to news of popular Torch Lake boat launch expansion

TORCH RIVER — Reaction was mixed to news over the weekend of the Michigan DNR's pending purchase of a piece of Torch Lake property at the south end of the lake near the popular sand bar area that will be used to expand a very popular boat launch site.

The state's $1.5 million purchase of 1.05 acres of Milton Township property adjacent to the current access site includes the building at the corner of Cherry Avenue and SW Torch Lake Drive known as the Pit Stop, and two seasonal cabins and a larger lodge informally known as the "Torch Lake Lodge" on 124 feet of frontage on the lake. 

According to Ron Olson, of the DNR's Parks and Recreation Division, plans currently call for improving the existing boat launch and creating more parking for vehicles and trailers, which often clog several nearby roads and streets when the limited amount of parking area at the existing launch fills up.
