Raymond A. Heise

Raymond A. Heise, 96 of Central Lake, passed away peacefully on Nov. 18, 2021 at Meadow Brook in Bellaire. Ray was born in Devils Lake, ND on July 21, 1925. Son of Herman and Emma (Huth) Heise. Growing up, Ray worked on a farm with his siblings while surviving the Great Depression. During WWII, at 19, he joined the US Marine Corp. After WWII, Ray moved to Detroit to work at Michigan Central Railway until he was accepted into his dream job as a member of the Detroit Police Department. He retired to Northern Michigan and enjoyed the quiet, small town atmosphere for the remainder of his life.

In his early days in Detroit, he met Dorothy Anselm who would later become his wife. Together, they had five sons. They enjoyed a 68 year marriage until Dorothy’s death in 2016. He was a proud former Marine having won a Bronze Star at the Battle of Iwo Jima where he drove landing tanks on the beach. He was a passionate fisherman and enjoyed traveling the 50 States with Dorothy. Ray was very social and loved to tell stories. He loved his community and was embraced by them. He initiated the construction of a Veteran’s Memorial celebrating all those who have served their country. The monument was constructed with the generous help of the community. He visited it often and showed it proudly to friends and family. For those who knew him, you will know too that he loved his “Green Bombs.”

Ray is survived by four sons. Bruce of Blairsville, PA; Douglas (Karlene) of Tarpon Springs, FL; Russell of Tarpon Springs, FL; and Kevin (Kim) of Howell, MI. Granddaughters Lisa, Madison; Grandsons Jeff, Scott, Jon and Chris and many great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by Dorothy, Baby Boy Heise, Granddaughter Lisa, his siblings, and close friend Marilyn Stover.
