Rapid City woman dies in car crash: Accident reportedly caused by drunk driver from Central Lake

REGION – A Rapid City woman died when the car she was riding in was struck head on by another vehicle while traveling in Antrim County’s Elk Rapid Township shortly after 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 12.

According to reports by the Antrim County Sheriff Department, a 27-year-old male from Central Lake was driving northbound on US-31, near the intersection with Bay Shore Drive, in a 2008 KIA Sorento when he allegedly crossed the centerline and struck a southbound vehicle, a 2012 Honda Fit driven by 47-year-old Mike Sears of Fife Lake, head on.

A passenger in the southbound vehicle, 68-year-old Heather Templin of Rapid City, was reportedly pronounced dead at the scene by the Antrim County Medical Examiner. Sheriff’s reports stated that Sears was treated at the scene for minor injuries.

All parties were reportedly wearing seat belts.

The driver of the KIA allegedly refused medical treatment at the scene of the accident. But, according to sheriff’s department reports, he was later transported to Munson Medical Center in Traverse City for medical clearance and a blood draw.

According to Sheriff Dan Bean, that driver was arrested for Operating While Intoxicated – Causing Death and lodged in the Antrim County Jail pending formal charges and arraignment by the Antrim County Prosecutor’s Office.

The road was closed for several hours while accident investigators gathered evidence. Multiple units from Elk Rapids and Antrim County responded to the scene
