RAPID CITY — Every year for at least the past seven years in November Rapid City Elementary School hosts a food drive.

According to Laura Gehman, principal of Rapid City Elementary, the students or /families bring in non-perishable food and toiletries.  The non-perishable items that are collected are donated to the Rapid City Food Pantry, which is located at the Torch Lake Assembly of God church in Rapid City.

The Village Market of Rapid City puts out a collection box at their store and also donates $1 to the school for every item collected. According to Gehman, “this year we collected 1,281 items. A couple of our families even came into school on a snow day to help volunteers from the Food Pantry load up the items. It took two truckloads to get everything over to the pantry.”

Gehman says that, “the focus of the food drive is always the month of November to coincide with our behavior focus on gratitude and being thankful.
