Patricia Ann Eman Saygers

Patricia Ann Erman Saygers, 88, passed on June 14, 2022.

She was the heart of her family throughout her life, from her childhood in Toledo, as the oldest child of Francis John and Naomi Ruth Decker Erman. She had five siblings, of which only Mary (Robert) Billau of Milan, MI, survives.

Pat was born Nov. 30, 1933, in Toledo. She was a graduate of Libby High School and Secretarial School. She was married to David Charles Saygers Nov. 21, 1953, in Toledo, and together they reached their 60th wedding anniversary in 2013, before David passed in May, 2014. They were living together at Masonic Pathways, in Alma, MI, at the time of both their deaths.

Pat was always a quiet leader and a gifted musician, becoming integral to any organization she became part of, especially Wesley United Methodist Church in Toledo, where she was organist and group leader for many years until her retirement with her husband David, to Central Lake, MI. She was a stay-at-home mom

and neighborhood mainstay while raising her children, but she also supported the business she and Dave owned, Roco Industrial Mail Service, as the sole administrator. Once her children were working on their adult lives, she took administrative positions at Friendly Center, NTAC, and St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, all in downtown Toledo, while also supporting Dave as his private secretary as he worked his way through his bachelor’s degree after selling the business.

When Dave and Pat moved to Central Lake in 1994, she became a very active member of Central Lake United Methodist Church, and later joined the Waldo Chapter of Eastern Stars in Bellaire, MI. Even in retirement at Masonic Pathways in 2014, she was a very active member of the residential community, serving as librarian, sorting mail, singing in and accompanying the choir, and many other volunteer activities.

Pat began her musical career under the tutelage of her grandmother, Amy Permar Decker, who was a well-known and regarded organist, pianist, music teacher and director in Toledo and Lakeside, OH, during the first half the of 20th century. Since childhood, Pat was always on-call for serving as accompanist for her very musical extended family and friends. As a young girl, she was often expected to turn pages for her grandmother, mother, and aunts during their concert performances, and delighted in playing piano recitals with her grandmother.

Pat was a loving and supportive part of the lives of her children, grandchildren and eventually great-grandchildren, attending countless concerts, recitals, plays, graduations, and other functions. Her natural musicianship and appreciation for music was inherited by all her children and grandchildren. Instrumentalists of lower brass, piano, organ, violin, cello, bass, and vocals have all sprung from her ever-present musical

nature. She will always remain part of her family through this musical inheritance.

She is survived by four children: Deborah (Steven) Hobbs, Central Lake; Ann (Carl) Fitch, Toledo; David (Connie Molnar) Saygers, Toledo; and Daniel (Debora) Saygers, Perrysburg, OH. Also surviving are seven grandchildren, Molly Porter, Columbus, OH:

Kristin (Clive) Fitch-Chafer, Berkshire, UK; Amy (Brian Heath) Porter, Columbus; Sara (Joseph) Bethune, Lakewood, WA; Andrew (Callie Haggerty) Saygers, Portland, OR; Bethann (Andy) Gillette, Marblemount, WA; and Nathan (Liz Baker) Saygers, of Portland, OR. Surviving great-grandchildren are William, Benjamin, James, and Eden. Also surviving are sisters-in-law Vicki Erman, Fostoria, OH, and Gail Erman, Colorado; brother-in-law Thomas (Carol) Saygers, Kentucky, and many nieces and nephews.

Pat was preceded in death by her husband David, her parents, brothers John, James, Robert, and Thomas, dear sisters-in-law Doraellen and Barbara Saygers, and Linnie Hunt Saygers, Dave’s mother.

There will be a private family memorial. Any tributes to Patricia Saygers can be made to Masonic Pathways, 1200 Wright Ave., Alma, MI 48801.
