KALKASKA — Kalkaska County officials believe they could be nearing the start of a new era for the Kaliseum Recreation Complex. Or, they could be nearing financial hardship and having to close the county-owned facility on West Mile Road.

Optimism over the facility’s future received a boost in November, when voters countywide approved a four-year, 0.25-mill millage renewal to support operations at the Kaliseum in the 2020 general election by 4,949 “yes” votes to 4,072 “no” votes.

The ballot request was the same millage renewal that will help partially fund operations at the Kaliseum but was defeated 2,413 to 2,237 in the Aug. 4 primary election. It’s also the same levy that had been approved by voters in 2008, 2012 and 2016.
