Pair of events to help Bear Lake Twp. launch summer season

BEAR LAKE TWP. – The residents of Bear Lake Township are getting ready to welcome the arrival of summer with a pair of community events, starting off with the annual Bear Lake Christian Church’s Rhubarb Social.

The annual gathering at the church, located on East Bear Lake Road, just off M-72 between Grayling and Kalkaska is set for noon to 3 p.m. on Sunday, May 26.

“It is our biggest fundraiser of the year,” said Pam Modos, one of the event’s organizers. “We have a large turnout for the hot dog lunches but mostly for the rhubarb pies.

“Between selling individual slices and whole pies, we usually go through 100 pies.”

But, with many of the area’s seasonal residents returning from warmer climates, the social is also a chance for neighbors to reunite.

“Yes, it is an important social opportunity,” Modos added. “Most of the snowbirds are back and a lot of people are in town for the holiday weekend. It’s a great event to bring the community together.”

The social also includes activities for kids and a live musical performance by “The Walkers.”

“The Walkers who are a gospel singing family always entertain at the social for us,” Modos said.

“They are very good.”

But, the fun in Bear Lake Township doesn’t stop there. The community spirit will again be on display the following weekend during the Bear Lake Township Firefighter Association’s annual Community Yard Sale on Saturday, June 1, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

According to organizers, the popular event is actually returning from a one-year hiatus.
