Over 350 anglers compete for top prize at annual Ice Fishing Derby

Scott Stanford won the Fife Lake Ice Fishing Derby’s top prize for the largest catch of the day, a pike that landed him a $1,000 check, on Saturday, Jan. 26. Overall, more than 350 anglers signed up for the annual competition on the frozen waters of Fife Lake.


FIFE LAKE – More than 350 anglers braved sub-zero temperatures last Saturday, Jan. 26, to compete for a variety of cash prizes in the annual Fife Lake Ice Fishing Derby.

The total of 358 fishing enthusiasts registered for the event on the frozen waters of Fife Lake, with registration falling just 19 short of last year’s total.

“We had quite a few come on Saturday but our rules always were no registrations on Saturday,” said Kathy Gwizdala, coordinator for the ice fishing contest.

“We feel it was amazing,” she added. “Even though we had freezing cold temperatures, the turnout on the lake was awesome.”

Other winners included:

  • Pike - first-place Jeff Walters, second place Dan Bachelor;
  • Perch - first place Jamaica Hunt, second place Jason Gonyer and third place Mike Elya; and
  • Walleye - first place Blake Gruse, second place Lee Wyatt and third place Ben Walters.


Children’s prizes were awarded to the top six youth anglers, including Jason Hunt (first, with a “huge” pike), Dylan Hunt (second), Owen Walters (third), Cody Martin (fourth), Hunter Engberg (fifth) and Gaige Cummer (sixth).

The shanty contest was won by Paul Miller, with Dawn and Jim Arnold taking second, Lee Wyatt third and Brandon Rookus taking fourth place. And, the Buc’s Bait Largest Perch caught by a child under 17 years was won by Owen Walters.
