Murder suspect to face charges
MANCELONA – As Antrim County reeled with the news of the area's first murder in almost a decade, residents questioned law enforcement response, while at the same time a family grieves and a 29-year-old Mancelona man awaited arraignment.
Daniel Sutherland, 64, died early Monday afternoon at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City after being shot last Saturday evening in his Green River area home near Alba.
Robert Vincent Gerring, 29, of Mancelona, was arraigned Wednesday morning on nine charges related to the incident including: Open Murder, Attempted Murder (of a 15-year-old neighbor who unintentionally became involved in the incident), home invasion, breaking and entering, possession of a firearm and possessing a firearm during the commission of a crime.
He is currently being held without bond at the Antrim County Jail, according to Antrim County Undersheriff Dean Pratt.
The situation reportedly began shortly before 4 p.m. Saturday afternoon when a Mancelona man, driving south on M-66 from his job at East Jordan Iron Works in Mancelona, encountered the wounded juvenile in the middle of M-66 near the intersection of Eddy School Road, who said he had been shot and asked the man to call police.
