KALKASKA — While spring weather may finally have arrived in northern Michigan, motorists traveling through Kalkaska will soon have to cope with the start of another season — road construction.

Officials with the Michigan Department of Transportation recently announced the start of a more than half-million dollar project on M-72 in Kalkaska. The project, which is slated to get underway on May 26, will include resurfacing a section of the state highway, along with construction of a center left-turn lane.

According to a prepared statement released by MDOT, the state agency will be investing $511,000 to resurface 0.4 miles of M-72, from Birch Street to east of Walnut Street, in Kalkaska. The project, which is being overseen by Elmer’s Crane & Dozer of Traverse City, the general contractor for the effort, will also include shoulder improvements.

“We’re removing the existing shoulders and rebuilding them to the same standards as one of our driving lanes — thicker pavement, primarily — and then paving a new surface of asphalt across the entire roadway width,” said James Lake with the MDOT Office of Communications. “This will allow for the addition of a center left-turn lane that will lead right into the eastbound left-turn lane onto US-131 North.”
