MAWSA hoping to begin Shanty Creek water line expansion this spring

MANCELONA — With a growing possibility of contaminated water wells due to the looming approach of a toxic plume of contamination containing hazardous carcinogenic chemicals, home owners in Shanty Creek Resort's Summit Village subdivision may see work begin this spring to provide them with a source of clean, fresh water. 

The hoped-for start of construction was announced on Tuesday, Feb. 9 during a virtual webinar conducted by Michigan's Office of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE).

Expanding the Mancelona Area Water and Sewer Authority (MAWSA) water lines, which presently serve portions of the communities of Mancelona, western Mancelona Township, and northern Custer Township, including the Schuss Mountain and Cedar River portions of Shanty Creek Resort, should be done as soon as possible to stay ahead of the expanding underground plume of contamination that has been slowly spreading from its original location on the southern edge of Mancelona since the mid-1940's, said engineer Len Mankowski, of Wood Environment and Infrastructure Solutions, which has worked with MAWSA since 2007.
