Low numbers force Forest Area to cancel football season

FIFE LAKE — A 2019 football season that began with so much promise for Forest Area ended abruptly on Monday when the school decided to cancel the remainder of the season due to low numbers.

The Warriors fell to 1-2 on the season after forfeiting Saturday’s game against Suttons Bay when their roster had shrunk to 12 players. One of those players was injured and wouldn’t be available for the next two to three weeks, leaving only 11 players who were able to suit up for the team.

“When you take the field at the varsity level with 11 kids, that’s not good,” said Forest Area head coach Brian Mumby. “If somebody gets hurt, if somebody is ineligible, if somebody misses a practice because they’re sick and they can’t play — any number of reasons can happen, and all of the sudden you’re down to one, two subs. It really became a numbers issue and a safety issue.”
