ELK RAPIDS – While uttering the old adage that “a woman’s place is in the home” will likely result in a disconcerting scowl, followed by a swift slap (or worse) in today’s world, it brings no offense to local resident Pam Lein.

Lein, who is married and the mother of two grown children, cherishes time spent in and around her family’s house in the Village of Elk Rapids

In between cooking, baking, sewing, gardening, creating various forms of art, tending to many household pets and more, she also holds down a full-time job.

But, it was her love of the prior interests – along with the urging of friends – that encouraged her to enter – and win – the Northwestern Michigan Fair Homemaker of the Year contest last year. She won 13 first-place honors, four second-place ribbons and one third, along with three sweepstakes awards. Her areas of participation included: canned goods, baking, sewing, crafts and photography.

By winning that top regional honor, Lein qualified for the 2018 State Homemaker of the Year contest, held recently downstate in Armada.

For that competition, she squared off against seven other candidates representing Saline, Oakland, Otsego, Saginaw, Fowlerville, Armada and Wayne counties. Each contestant was required to submit a number of entrees in specific categories, interview with a panel of judges and detail their plans for representing and raising awareness of local fairs across the state.

While each candidate brought an impressive portfolio to the table, it may have been Lein’s commitment to the final requirement that prompted the judges to name her as this year’s State Homemaker of the Year in Michigan.
