KALKASKA – Few people who were alive at the time can forget where they were on the morning of Sept. 11, 2001, when two hijacked jet airliners flew into the towers of the World Trade Center and another into the Pentagon, killing nearly 3,000 people and injured about 6,000 more.

And, local scouts are helping to remind people of that fateful day, as well as honor first-responders, during an annual 9-11 Memorial Service scheduled for 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 11 at Railroad Square, by the Trout Monument, in downtown Kalkaska.

Kevin Crawford, a former den leader and volunteer for Kalkaska Boy Scout and Cub Scout Troop and Pack No. 629, helped establish the hour-long ceremony several years ago in hopes of reminding people, including youngsters who’ve grown up after the 9-11 attacks, about the tragic day, and also to highlight the heroics of the first-responders who risks their lives to save others.

“One, it’s to remind everyone of what happened on 9-11,” Crawford said. “But, it’s morphed into recognizing first-responders and what they do for us every day.

“The fire and police are excited to show up for the ceremony every year.”

Previous 9-11 ceremonies have included representatives from the Kalkaska Department of Public Safety, Kalkaska County Sheriff’s Department, Michigan Department of Natural Resources, Kalkaska Township Fire Department Station No. 7 – and others, drawing as many as 150 people to downtown Kalkaska.

“It varies from year to year,” Crawford said of the attendance at the annual gathering.

According to organizers, this year’s event will include an address by Kalkaska Village President Harley Wales, a prayer, an honor salute by members of Kalkaska Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 8684 and music by bagpipe players, as well as a moment of silence.

“We try to keep it short because the kids have to go back to school,” Crawford added.
