Local duo brings centuries of history to new light.

KALKASKA TOWNSHIP — “First thing, I want you to know that we did it all with only plain water, not a drop of chemicals,” said local helper, Leo Blaisdell. 

This past August, Blaisdell and friend/relative, Lauren Rice, spent countless hours giving Kalkaska’s Evergreen Cemetery a facelift. The two men took it upon themselves to power wash every single one of the several thousand headstones and monuments in the Kalkaska Township cemetery.

When asked if they had to get any special permissions to clean the stones Blaisdell quipped, “No one here complained,” cracking a huge smile. He added “they are pretty quiet around these parts.” 

Blaisdell and Rice went on to heap high praise on the current caretakers of the cemetery, Sexton Jay Roush and Sexton Assistant Devere Bourne.
