Little Old Women - An open heart doesn’t always refer to surgery

When the hour grows late

And the shadows are long,

New friendships are rare

While old ones stay strong


That was the first verse of a poem I wrote in my “new” friend Ann’s birthday card. I was attempting to express to her how exceptional it is to form a “forever friendship” when “forever” doesn’t cover the territory it once did. When you move to a new location in your eighth decade as I did, there aren’t a lot of vacancy signs in the friendship department.

I have met many wonderful people in this area, particularly when I was doing interviews for the Leader newspaper, and I am on friendly terms with many, but that is not the same as a forever friend. I consider myself lucky to have formed a couple of such connections in my years here to add to those that are scattered about the country from Washington State to Arizona, and in between.
