A lifetime of service

BELLAIRE — Reg Sprik graduated from Manton High School in June of 1946, and knew immediately what he had to do next. 

There was a war to be fought, and he had an obligation to do what he could to help end that war.

So he went right down to the local recruiting office and joined the United States Army. 

"Technically, the war was over, as far as active combat, but there was still a lot of work to be done, with Japanese soldiers holed up in caves all over the South Pacific that didn't know that Japan had surrendered and continued to fight the Americans who were based on those islands," Sprik said last week. "Our soldiers were still fighting, and still dying, and I wanted to do whatever I could to help bring that fighting to an end."
