ELLSWORTH — The last thing teams in the Northern Lakes Conference want to hear is that this year’s Ellsworth boys basketball team is the most experienced among the last few that have dominated league play.

Ending a string of conference wins that has reached 48 games — including three straight undefeated league titles — is made more difficult this season by the fact that the Lancers return four starters from a squad that won 15 games and captured the first boys hoops district since 2009, with each of those players being seniors or juniors. That’s an added bonus considering the past two rosters have featured just two senior starters and five who were either freshmen or sophomores.

“This is the first year where we’ve really got some upperclassmen — two seniors, two juniors and a sophomore starting,” said Ellsworth coach Jarod Steenwyk. “I’m pretty thrilled with the guys I’ve got back. We’ve definitely got a solid five.”
