KPS superintendent announces resignation

KALKASKA – The Kalkaska Public Schools Board of Education had a very important task added to its to-do list for 2018. The seven-member board will need to find a new superintendent.

In a letter to the board dated Dec. 18, Supt. Karen Sherwood announced her resignation as KPS’ top administrator, a position she’s held since mid-2014, when she replaced interim Supt. Lee Sandy.

“It has become apparent that a strained relationship exists between certain members of the current board of education and me,” the 49-year-old Sherwood stated. “During the last couple of years, the role and responsibilities of certain board members have crossed the lines with the role and duties of the superintendent.

“Under the circumstances, I believe it would be in the best interest of the students for me to step aside to allow the board time to hire a replacement superintendent and to accomplish a smooth transition.”
