KALKASKA – Kalkaska Public Schools might soon be making smart phones even smarter.

Starting on Jan. 23, the local school district will be utilizing a text messaging service, “SchoolMessenger,” that will deliver text messages on school-related events, closings or even safety alerts directly to a subscriber’s cell phone.

“Kalkaska Public Schools is excited to announce that we will be offering text message alerts beginning Jan. 23, 2019,” said Cari Jo Berlin, administrative assistant to KPS Superintendent Terry Starr on the district’s Facebook page.

The service is free and individuals may subscribe by just sending a text message of “Y” or “Yes” to the school district’s code number, 67587.

“Please follow the directions on the instruction sheet to ‘opt in,” Berlin added. “You must opt in to take advantage of this messaging service.”

Users may also quit the service, or opt out, by just replying “Stop” to a message.
