KPS officials seek to sell sponsorships to buy new scoreboards

KALKASKA – Officials at Kalkaska Public Schools know how generous local business can be, with community members having stepped up to contributing their time and money again and again over the years.

But, while needing up to three new scoreboards, Justin Thorington, athletic director at Kalkaska High School and principal of the district’s Alternative High School, wanted to give businesses a break, rather than asking for yet another donation.

“They’re tapped out,” Thorington said. “(And) we don’t have the money for three scoreboards in our budget.”

So, instead, Thorington urged the KPS Board of Education to allow him partner with Daktronics, a South Dakota-based scoreboard company, to sell sponsorships and fund the three scoreboards at a cost of up to $45,000 each year for a five-year period.
