KALKASKA – The message from the leader of the Kalkaska Public Schools Board of Education was a simple one. He wants the board’s three standing committees to be more active and to meet more often.

Kevin Davis’ comments came as the school board held its annual organizational board meeting on Monday, Jan. 8.

Davis was re-elected board president by a 6-1 vote, with Wendy Watson casting the lone dissenting vote.

Board members were more split on who would be No. 2, with Rachel Birgy and John Rogers both being nominated for vice president, a post held by Rogers in 2017.

According to board bylaws, the board was required to vote on Birgy first, as she was nominated first by fellow trustee Aaron Popa.

Birgy was appointed to the post in a split 4-3 vote, by also having the support of Popa, Watson and Stacey Hicks.

Popa and Watson were re-appointed to the positions of secretary and treasurer, respectively, by unanimous votes.
