KALKASKA – The staff and students of Kalkaska Public Schools continued the process of remembering and saying goodbye to one of their own this week.

Kalkaska High School Principal Chuck Sorentino requested a moment of silence during his report to the Kalkaska Public Schools Board of Education at its regular meeting Monday, March 12, honoring 16-year-old Seth Chopp.

Chopp, a sophomore at KHS, was killed in a two-vehicle accident on the afternoon of March 6, when the 2011 Ford Focus he was driving reportedly lost control, crossed the centerline on County Road 571, near Meyers Road in Excelsior Township, and struck an American Waste garbage truck at about 4:30 p.m.

According to reports from the Kalkaska County Sheriff’s Department, speed and slick road conditions due to wintery weather were considered as possible factors in the crash.

Chopp was pronounced dead at the scene, while the lone passenger in the car, 16-year-old Tori Wieling, was transported to Munson Medical Center in Traverse City, where she was reportedly listed in serious condition.
