KDPS hosts new event for Birch Street students
KALKASKA — The Kalkaska Department of Public Safety and Birch Street Elementary School teamed up to make Christmas a merrier holiday with what village officials hope was the first annual "Shop with a Cop" on Friday, Dec. 18.
KDPS officials used donations from local businesses, as well as money from its "No Shave November" fundraiser to purchase gifts for the family members of 10 students at Birch Street, as well as gas cards.
Lt. Aaron Popa said the students were recommended by staff at Birch Street Elementary and the program is hoped to encourage a more positive relationship with local law enforcement.
"We anticipate it being an annual event," Popa added.
All five KDPS officers, as well as several reserve officers and other volunteers, joined the students in helping wrap the gifts.
