KCRC set for another busy construction season in 2019
KALKASKA – While winter starts to grip northern Michigan for the next several months, the Kalkaska County Road Commission (KCRC) is already looking forward to a very busy construction season once the ice and snow clears.
Already, KCRC officials have as many as eight major projects totaling more than $3.5 million on the schedule for the coming year.
“The number of projects varies from year to year based on the total cost of each project,” said John Rogers, KCRC manager. “Typically, we try to find a blend of large projects that consume a lot of money with smaller projects that consume less. This way we can affect as many roads as possible with the money that is available.”
The $3.5 million in road work in 2019 tops spending figures for the previous four years, even beating the more than $3.1 million spent in 2017, when participating townships contributed more than $1.2 million to various projects.
And, Rogers said the number of projects for this year could grow, if townships are able to find funds for other potential efforts.
“I anticipate one or two townships may come forward with projects for 2019,” he said. “They have a different budget cycle than the road commission.
