Kalkaska rebuilding local economy on back of budding marijuana industry

KALKASKA — For years, Village of Kalkaska officials have boasted they were ahead of the curve in seeking to grow economic opportunities that would result from changes in state law.

And, those efforts are seemingly helping the village gain a reputation in certain circles. A recent story in the Northern Express focusing on Kalkaska and its medical marijuana industry was titled “Marijuana Mecca.”

Village officials didn’t shy away from the moniker at the regular Kalkaska Village Council meeting on Monday. Scott Yost, village manager, has even said the establishment of a medical and recreational marijuana industry might be the area’s third boom, following the previous lumber and gas and oil booms of years past.
