Kalkaska High School, Middle School bands achieve ‘superior’ ratings

KALKASKA — The music world already has The Supremes, so the Kalkaska High School Symphonic and Middle School Concert bands will stick with Blazers.
Most likely, no one would blame them if they consider staking claim to The Superiors.
For the 17th time in 23 years under the leadership of Craig Chissus, the Blazers recently earned Superior ratings by the Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association.
“For both ensembles, I couldn't be more proud of their attitude, dedication, efforts and follow-through,” Chissus, KPS Director of Bands, said of the ensembles’ ratings. “This achievement speaks volumes in an ‘ordinary’ year, but with shutdowns and students in quarantine the challenges were like no other."
The pandemic changed the format of the statewide competition this year, providing a virtual option for the Band & Orchestra Festival. Each participating band was required to perform two pieces, but one had to be from a required list.
