Kalkaska boy wins Red Wings helmet design contest
KALKASKA — Detroit Red Wings goalie Jonathan Bernier has 5-year-old Kalkaska resident Drew McCarty to thank for a newly-designed helmet.
And perhaps even a little bit of good luck.
It was McCarty’s helmet design that won the #MIKidsCan Detroit Red Wings helmet design contest and earned him the right to have his design made into a helmet worn during a game by Bernier. As the winner of the contest McCarty was invited to the Red Wings game where Bernier donned the helmet — a career performance where Bernier made 50 saves, nearly single-handedly winning the game for Detroit in a 2-1 overtime loss to the Dallas Stars.
