K-Town Showdown races return to local airport

KALKASKA – Supporters of organized drag races at the Kalkaska Village Airport might just be getting their wish for such events to become a new tradition.

The K-Town Showdown Drag Races are slated to return to the local airport, located on Island Lake Road in Kalkaska, for two weekends this spring and summer, including Saturday, May 11, and again on Saturday, Aug. 17. Rain-out dates are slated for May 12 and Aug. 18.

The races made their debut last fall on Aug. 25, allowing local drivers – wanting to know exactly how fast their vehicles would go – to participate in a new fundraiser for the Kalkaska County Agricultural Fair.

The pits open at 10 a.m. on May 11 for registration and vehicle inspection; with the spectator gate opening at 11 a.m. Drivers will participate in open practices and “Grudge Races” from 1-4:30 p.m., with elimination races set for 5 p.m. until midnight.

Bill Garrock, one of the Showdown’s organizers, said the grudge races allow a driver to maybe finally see if he has a faster car than his friend or neighbor.

“I have a car and I want to race you. That’s a grudge practice,” Garrock said. “Grudge races are a kind of head-to-head thing. Whoever gets to the finish line first, wins.”

Participants will compete for cash payouts, which will be based on the number of participating racers.

In the event of inclement weather, the race will be postponed until Sunday and follow the same time schedule.
